the always cheerful bichon frise descendedfrom the water spaniel in the 13th century in the mediterranean. over time, spanish tradersdistributed them throughout several countries, including france, where in the 16th centurythe bichon became the darling of the royal courts. bichons were also a favorite subjectof spanish painters, and they often performed in circuses alongside toy poodles. this small non-working group breed standsaround 12 inches at the shoulder. it's easy to see how the breed got its name, which isfrench for "fluffy lap dog." the bichon has a curly white double coat, expressive darkeyes and a plumed tail carried over the back. the coat grows continually and requires regulargrooming.


bichons are cuddly, easy-going and playfullittle dogs who need regular exercise and playtime to burn off energy. because theircoat sheds very little, they're a good choice for allergy-sufferers, but these fun littledogs make great companions for everyone.
