the bernese mountain dog is one of four varietiesof swiss mountain dogs. this working group breed originated in the swiss mountains, whereit developed a capacity for cold weather work. named for the canton of bern, these dogs wereused for various tasks on farms including pulling carts and driving cattle. during the 1800s, the number of bernese mountaindogs declined; but its winning personality ensured that breeders continued to protectand promote its lines and make it the loved breed it is today. these big, sturdy dogs stand up to 28 inchestall and weigh up to 110 pounds. their thick, tri-colored coat is prone to shedding andneeds to be brushed regularly. unfortunately,


bernese have a relatively short lifespan. due to its intelligence and obedient nature,along with a cheery and loyal disposition, this breed continues to endure as an excellentchoice for farm, conformation and therapy work, and is also an ideal family friend and watchdog.
