the cocker spaniel is the smallest memberof the spaniel family, all of whom are sporting group dogs descended from a 14th century breedknown as the spanyell. over time, this breed was divided into land and water spaniels.cockers belong to the first group, although they take readily to water when given thechance. the cocker spaniel itself is divided intoamerican and english breeds, each slightly different in appearance. at up to 32 poundsand standing up to 16 inches at the shoulder, the english cocker spaniel is slightly largerthan his american cousin. the american cocker also has a shorter face with a more roundedforehead, and usually has a cropped tail. both versions have thick, wavy coats thatneed regular brushing.


cockers are good hunters who do well at bothflushing and retrieving small game. they have a sweet, gentle nature that makes them a greatfit as a family pet. this active breed needs daily exercise in order to remain happy and healthy.
